James Ramsden (1822 -1896)


Sir James Ramsden (1822-1896) was an industrialist and civic leader who played a leading role in the development of Barrow-in-Furness. As the managing director of the Furness Railway and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, he oversaw the town's transformation into an industrial powerhouse and served as the Borough's first Mayor; an office he held for five terms. He was knighted in 1872. Ramsden's statue stands at the insersection of Duke Street and Abbey Road. Ramsden Dock was named after him.
