Hawkeys Lane

Hawkeys Lane is a road which forms part of the B1304 route in North Shields. It is roughly half mile long, running north from Albion Road to Queen Alexandra Road. In addition to residential housing, along the road are the War Memorial (1923), former Victoria Jubilee Infirmary (1932), and old Queen Alexandra 6th form college building (1909) - all 3 are included on the National Heritage List for England. There is also a healthcare hub, North Shields Methodist Church (1932), an Aldi supermarket and an entrance to Spring Gardens Primary School. Early maps indicate there was once a tollhouse for the Newcastle to North Shields Turnpike near the south of the Lane.[1] There was also once a salt water swimming pool on Hawkeys Lane, from c.1907 to c.1969.[2] Hawkey's Hall Quoit Club, founded in 1860, was located by the old school site (moved in 1906).[3,4] North Shields Athletic (a forerunner of North Shields Football Club), formed in 1896, moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane in c.1900.
