George Barclay Bruce (1821 - 1908)

Sir George Barclay Bruce (1st October 1821 - 25th August 1908) was a prominent civil engineer. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and was the son of John Bruce, the founder of Percy Street Academy. In 1836, George was apprenticed to the railway engineer Robert Stephenson, who had been a pupil at the Percy Street Academy. He then spent two years working on the construction of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, followed by two years as resident engineer on the Northampton and Peterborough line. Robert Stephenson later appointed him to work on the Royal Border Bridge, after it opened in 1850. Bruce spent much of his later career working for railways in India and South America. His legacy in Northern England include a series of railway viaducts constructed in the early 1850's for the Newcastle and Carlise Railway (those at Alston, Burnstones, Gilderdale, Knar, and Lambley are listed on the National Heritage List for England). Bruce was president of the Institution of Civil Engineers between June 1887 and May 1889, and was knighted in 1888.
