Fourstones Colliery and Lime Works

Fourstones Colliery opened in 1805. There was a lime works associated with the colliery, with a large bank of lime kilns, which can still be seen today on the west side of Fourstones. Limestone was transported south from Prudhamstone Quarry via a tramway. Coal from the colliery was used to roast the limestone to procuce fertiliser and building materials. In the 1860s, the colliery was under the ownership of William Benson (and later Wm. Benson & Sons Ltd), who also owned Montagu Main Colliery. At its peak level of employment, in 1925, there were 120 people employed at Fourstones Colliery (89 working below ground and 31 working on the surface).[1] The colliery was abandoned in April 1927.
