Derwent Walk Express

The Derwent Walk Express is an art work by Andy Frost, which was installed in 1987 on Hexham Road in Swalwall, Gateshead. It is a two-thirds life-size representation of a steam train on top of the abutments of a 19th century railway bridge. It forms a highly visible gateway to the Derwent Walk pathway which leads to the south. It was commissioned by Tyne and Wear County Council Gateshead MBC and Northern Arts, and unveiled by Normn Buchan MP on 9th October, 1987. The work was refurbished in 2005. The Derwent Walk Express is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
