Bird in Bush Inn
Bird in Bush is a public house in Elsdon, which dates from the mid-to-late 18th century. Whellan's 1855 directory of Northumberland lists John Whaley as the licensed victualler (landlord) for the Bird in Bush Inn, and also as carrier (a person who operated a horse-drawn vehicle to transport goods, parcels, messages, and passengers, usually over a regular route).[1] The Bird in Bush is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. In the past there were two other inns at Elsdon; The Bacchus (previously the Scotch Arms) and The Crown, at a time when Elsdon thrived as a resting stop for cattle drovers and coaches along the turnpike roads.
