Bardon Mill Colliery (1940-1972)
Bardon Mill Colliery, known as Henshaw Colliery until 1948, was a drift mine located west of Bardon Mill in Northumberland. Sinking of the mine began in 1938 and it began production in 1940. The first drift was 340 yards long at a gradient of 1:3. In 1964, there were 340 people employed at the colliery (306 working below ground and 34 above ground).[1] Bardon Mill Colliery finally closed on the 24th November 1972 after the seams were becoming thinner, water seepage from the River South Tyne had become a serious problem, and geological faults prevented more coal from being taken. Today, Bardon Mill and Henshaw Village Hall is located on the former site of the colliery.
