Barcombe Colliery

Barcombe Colliery, located north of Westwood, near Bardon Mill, was an adit (a horizontal or near-horizontal tunnel, driven into a hillside or mountain to reach shallow mineral deposits without costly vertical shafts). It's dates of operation are unclear, but it was recorded under the ownersip of William Makepeace & Co. in the 1850s.[1] In the 1950s it was owned by Errington, Reay & Co. Ltd., who also owned the pottery in Bardon Mill. There was once a tramway network which ran between Barcombe Colliery and other coal mine adits, and also past quarries, then south towards Bardon Mill, terminating at a lime kiln there.[1]
