The Baltic Flour Mills on the Gateshead Quayside were opened in 1950. They were built for the Rank Hovis company, based on a 1930's design by Gelder and Kitchen architects.

The Turner Prize exhibition, hosted at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, opens to the public on the 21st October, 2011. The exhibition had over 149,000 visitors.
