The iconic Art Deco style cafe at Duke's Walk by the North Promenade was built in June 1930 by Whitley Bay & District Council, and originally called the "Garden Restaurant". It was refurbished and renamed as the Rendezvous Café in 1957 when the Arnone family took ownership.
The Lyric Cinema in Heaton opened on the 6th January 1936 with Shirley Temple in "The Little Colonel". It was built for and operated by Tyne Picture Houses Ltd. of Wallsend. The building was designed by Newcastle architects Marshall & Tweedy Ltd , with internal decorations by R.J. Richardson.
The Ritz cinema, with 1,062 seats, opened on the 9th November 1936 with Laurel & Hardy in "The Bohemian Girl". The Art Deco building in Forest Hall was designed by architects Percy Lindsey Browne & Son of Newcastle.
Spark's Daylight Bakery on Bishopton Avenue in Stockton-on-Tees was built in 1938. The Art Deco style building by Kitching & Co. of Middlesbrough was built for Ralph Spark & Sons. Ltd. It incorporated a bakers and company offices. an innovative feature was using hot air from the bakery to heat the rest of the building, through special ducts.
The distictive Art Deco style Wills Building, located off the Coast Road in Wallend, Newcastle, was built from 1946-50. It was built as the W.D. & H.O. Wills cigarette factory. The factory closed in 1986 and stood unused for many years until the main building was redeveopled as luxury apartments and reopened as The Wills Building November 1999.
