In Britain:
- 22 January 1947; the UK government reduced meat rations to 1 shillings worth per week. Consumer rationing had been introduced in the Second World War, but continued after the war ended.
In Northern England:
- 1st January 1947; nationalisation of the coal industry took effect - the NCB took over 958 collieries.
- 19th April 1947; Newton Aycliffe was established under the New Towns Act of 1946.
