Wallsend Park was officially opened by shipyard owner, George Burton Hunter, on the 4th June 1900. The opening is said to be the largest ever assembly witnessed at a public event in Wallsend. The 14 acres of land for the park had been donated by Robert Richardson Dees in 1897; it had previously been the site of the Wallsend 'C' pit. (the park is now called 'Richardson Dees Park').
