St Mary's Catholic Church, Barnard Castle


St Mary's RC Church is located on Birch Road in Barnard Castle. The Gothic Revival-style building dates from 1928. However, a Catholic mission in Barnard Castle had been established much earlier, in 1847. A Catholic church had originally been planned in the grounds of the Bowes Museum. A foundation stone was laid in 1875, but the church was never completed following the deaths of Josphine Bowes in 1874 and John Bowes in 1885.
