The machinings of heavy guns

Description
This print shows one of our latest heavy gun Machine Shops; the operations mostly carried out here are turning and rifling. The Shop is about 370 feet in length, and also contains a smaller Shop for machining the lighter types of Ordnance. Over this latter part of the Shop is a long gallery where the breech fittings for guns up to 6 inches are finished and fitted to their respective guns. As many as 200 guns have been in this gallery at one time. We are delighted to share images from the 15 Photographic Folios we hold at the City Library, ships built by Armstrong, Mitchell, Whitworth and Company Ltd. between 1880 and 1931. These images are, to the best of our knowledge, in the public domain. You are welcome to use them in any way you like – we would love it if you could say you got them from the Newcastle City Library Photographic Collection. We are unable to provide High Quality Digital copies of these images. -
