Newgate, Barnard Castle

Newgate is a historic street in Barnard Castle, which is the main eastern approach into the town centre from the A66, via Abbey Bridge, leading to the Market Cross. It was one of the four primary medieval gateways into the town. The street falls within the Barnard Castle Conservation Area, notable for its tightly packed row of terraced townhouses and former shops. Many of the sandstone buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries, including several listed buildings.
