Rockcliffe

Rockcliffe is an area by the coast in the south-east part of Whitley Bay. The name is seen locally in Rockcliffe First School (Grafton Road), Rockcliffe Bowling & Tennis Club, (Victoria Park), The Rockcliffe Arms (Algernon Place), Rockcliffe Street and Rockcliffe Gardens. Rockcliff Rugby Club was founded in 1887, originally its ground was located on Grafton Road. Many of the buildings in the area date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the present school building opened in 1911 and Rockcliffe Bowling and Tennis Club was established in 1925. The place name is fitting with the rocky cliffs here, by the sea and South Promonade. However, the place name may possibly derive Old Norse "rauðr" (meaning red) and Old English clif (cliff) - meaning "red cliff", implying a sandstone cliff-face (this is why Rockcliff in Cumbria is thought to be so named). South of the promenade are Table Rocks and Brown's Bay.
