Dalton Pumping Station
Dalton Water Pumping Station was built 1873-1879 by Thomas Hawksley in Venetian Gothic Revival style.[1] It is located in Cold Hesledon, near Dalton-le-Dale. The engine house still contains the original pair of 72" single-acting non-rotative beam engines, by Davy Bros, 1879. The engines ran at 5 strokes per minute, with each stroke delivering 140 gallons of water.[2] Dalton Pumping Station is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England. Sunderland and South Shields Water Company sold the site in 1994. Thomas Hawksley also designed the Ryhope Pumping Station, now a museum, and also Grade II* Listed.
