Brigham & Cowan, shipyard (1876-1982)

Brigham & Cowan was established in 1876 by Thomas Brigham and Malcolm Cowan. The company's ship repair business had 3 drydocks at South Shields. Brigham & Cowan Ltd became part of British Shipbuilders in 1977, but closed in 1982.[1] Brigham & Cowan also had a ship repair yard in Hull. In South Shields a remaining legacy of the company is the Brigham And Cowan Social Club in Brigham Place, South Shields. Today modern housing ("Captains Wharf") has been built around the former docks which still resonates with its ship yard past.
